When I was asked to give the commencement address to a graduating class of 9th graders, I jumped at the chance. You see, I have four teenagers of my own and I feel like this is the point in my life when I am supposed to tell them something profound. So thank you Buckley community for giving me this opportunity. I tried this speech out on them last night and am happy to report that none of them fell asleep until I was three quarters done. When composing this message I searched my memory for my same experience back in 1969 when I was sitting right where you are. I realized that I could hardly remember one single speaker from my junior high or high school days. Now that could be my age. I'm old enough now that some days I can't remember how old I am. But it could also have been a sign of the times. Remember, I was part of the student rebellion, and we did not listen to anything that someone over 30 said because they were just too clueless. Or so we thought.

I will use Microsoft as an example of why valuations matter.

There has been some debate on Seeking Alpha as to whether or not valuations matter.  Chuck Carnevale seems to think that they do matter.  Chowder does not seem to place much importance on valuations.

“Các Cụ” bảo “49 chưa qua, 53 đã tới” với sự ám chỉ cái tuổi già, cái tuổi mà người ta có thể “chết bất đắc kỳ tử”. Để cho rõ ràng, Các Cụ ở đây là những người xưa, đã chết, ít nhất là cha mẹ của những ông bà tám hay chín chục tuổi thời nay. Trước hết, phải đồng ý với Các Cụ là ở thời Các Cụ, tức khoảng cuối thế kỉ 19 tới đầu thế kỷ 20, tuổi thọ trung bình của công dân toàn cầu là cỡ 40-50 (hình 1). Có nghĩa phần lớn mọi người sẽ có thể chết vào tầm 50 tuổi, một số không nhỏ chết trước 30-40, một số sẽ sống thọ tới 70-80. Có câu “Thất Thập Cổ Lai Hi” có nghĩa là sống tới 70 là hi hữu lắm rồi. Hình 1 cho thấy châm ngôn và hiểu biết của Các Cụ ở thời hiện tại là sai hoàn toàn: tuổi thọ trung bình ở Châu Á nói chung là trên 70. Người Việt nói riêng, năm 2016, tính trung bình, thì sống thọ tới 76 tuổi.

Trước khi phân tích thêm tại sao “70 tuổi mới là 40”, thì tôi phải giải thích rõ cái nghĩa trung bình vì phần lớn mọi người không có khái niệm thống kê, không hiểu chính xác trung bình có nghĩa là gì. Khi đo đạc cái gì đó, trung bình chỉ phản ánh giá trị quanh trung tâm của một loạt con số tương tự nhưng có giá trị cao thấp khác nhau. Trong trường hợp tuổi tác cũng vậy, ít người sẽ để ý là số trẻ em chết trước khi trưởng thành ở cuối thế kỷ 19 là rất nhiều, dù có không ít số người sống thọ tới 70. Có vài lý do chính yếu mà ở thời điểm hiện tại chúng ta sống thọ hơn, tính theo trung bình, so với thế kỷ 19 là tỉ lệ trẻ em chết yểu, sống qua tuổi trưởng thành tăng lên đáng kể. Trẻ ẻm ít bị chết yểu hơn chủ yếu là nhờ vác-xin. Còn số người sống lâu tăng lên cũng đáng kể vì họ có điều kiện kinh tế và chăm sóc y tế hơn trước rất nhiều. Tôi còn nhớ bố mẹ kể thời Các Cụ cơm chẳng có mà ăn, đói khát triền miên, lại cộng thêm chiến tranh nữa, làm cho tỉ lệ người ta chết sớm rất nhiều.
