Cross-correlation scan between an OPA pulse and a chirped stretched 800 nm pulse

We overlap the uncompressed 800 nm pulse (800 nm, ~140 ps) and the OPA (1800 nm, 50 fs) on a BBO crystal. The output light bounces off a grating, separating light at different wavelengths. The overlap signal from the sum-frequency generation is in the ~500 nm range. Since the uncompressed 800 nm pulse is severely chirped, when we scan the OPA delay through 800 nm pulse, the overlap signal changes color and position with time. This is a very interesting phenomenon to observe!

Passionately everyday

I saved this video about a decade ago. I was really impressed and inspired at that time. I am not the creator of this video, and I lost track of the source so I couldn't cite it properly. However, I think it's worth sharing so I do it.

Tiếng ru

 ... ầu ơi ...
Núi cao bởi có đất bồi
Núi chê đất thấp núi ngồi ở đâu
Trăm dòng sông đổ biển sâu
Biển chê sông bé biển đâu nước còn
Tre già yêu lấy măng non
Chắt chiu như mẹ thương con tháng ngày.

Mohnish Pabrai: Well, I think what happens is that certainly with both of them, there is a tremendous amount in the public domain. But I think when I met Warren for lunch with my family, first of all, within about five minutes, he puts you at ease, and you think you're having lunch with your grandfather, which is great. But I think he's very cognizant of the fact that it's an important event for the people who are attending, and he wants to deliver value at that lunch. So anytime you would ask him a question, he would answer it in a manner where there was tremendous learning. So I'll give you an example. I asked Warren a question about Rick Guerin. When Charlie and Warren had started out, there were three of them. It was Charlie, Warren, and then the third guy, Rick Guerin, and they used to make investments together. They ran separate funds, but they used to work together. In fact, even when they did the See's deal, Rick, Charlie, and Warren had interviewed Chuck Huggins to be the CEO together. The three of them were firing questions to him together to figure out whether he was the guy.

Then Rick Guerin pretty much disappeared off the map. I've met Rick recently, but he disappeared off the map, so I asked Warren, are you in touch with Rick, and what happened to Rick? And Warren said, yes, he's very much in touch with him. And he said, Charlie and I always knew that you would become incredibly wealthy. And he said, we were not in a hurry to get wealthy; we knew it would happen. He said, Rick was just as smart as us, but he was in a hurry. And so actually what happened -- some of this is public -- was that in the '73, '74 downturn, Rick was levered with margin loans. And the stock market went down almost 70% in those two years, and so he got margin calls out the yin-yang, and he sold his Berkshire stock to Warren. Warren actually said I bought Rick's Berkshire stock at under $40 apiece, and so Rick was forced to sell shares at ... $40 apiece because he was levered.

And then Warren went a step further. He said that if you're even a slightly above-average investor who spends less than they earn, over a lifetime you cannot help but get rich if you are patient. And so the lesson.

From Missouri to Tennessee and back in a nutshell

After I came to Missouri, we (a group of former physics students from HCMUP) drove almost a thousand kilometers from Missouri to Tennessee to visit a family of our friends. Tennessee gave me a first impression of being greener than and different from many states that I have visited. We had a great time, I even gained a bit of weight thanks to all the food prepared by the ladies. After watching this video, I still feel dizzy since so many things were packed in just 5 minutes. In 5 days, we have driven around 2900 km, visiting many beautiful places: Fall Creek Falls, Great Smoky National Park, Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, Lookout Mountain.

Maramec Spring Park, St. James, and July-4th fireworks at Rolla, MO

Coming back to Missouri after a long trip to Tennesse, on July 4th, 2020, we spent the morning hiking at Maramec Spring Park, St. James and the night watching Independence day fireworks at Rolla. The U.S. does not have only metropolises filled with skyscrapers but also beautiful and diversified natural ecosystems. Even after 6 years of living and studying here, there are many places I have not had a chance to set foot on yet. This video shows a couple of moments during this nice and peaceful day.
